Salalah: The First Regional Forum of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation (ALECSO) held in Salalah, Governorate of Dhofar, concluded on Tuesday.
The two-day forum recommended the development of national policies in this field, the integration of culture and arts into educational curricula, the enhancement of training programmes for educational cadres, the expansion of joint youth initiatives and the establishment of a specialized Arab platform for the exchange of experiences and expertise.
The forum, organised by Oman National Commission for Education, Culture and Science in cooperation with ALECSO, saw the participation of experts and educators from GCC states and other Arab countries.
The recommendations highlighted the need to devise comprehensive national policies and programmes on culture and arts with support from ALECSO and specialised experts. The updates are envisaged to reflect the innate values of each country and to keep pace with developments in the process of education.
A key recommendation was that the subjects of culture, arts and heritage be integrated into school curricula in an interactive manner that contributes to enhancing the learning experience and developing the skills of thinking among students.
The forum participants called for the development of regular training programmes for teachers and educators in the target fields.
The forum recommended the establishment of an Arab observatory for education in culture and arts, under the supervision of ALECSO, to monitor experiences and practices and exchange expertise among Arab countries. The observatory, scheduled to be supervised by ALECSO, will be entrused to monitor leading experiences and and exchange expertise among Arab countries.
The forum laid emphasis on launching joint Arab innovative programmes targeting youth, to enhance communication among generations and to support the process of sustainable development in the Arab world.
The forum included reference documents drafted by the technical team of ALECSO, among them a reference guide for school theatre, a reference guide for music education and a reference guide for visual arts education.
