OMR 500 fine, jail term in Oman for students disrupting educational system in public, private schools

Muscat: Students who fail to follow the rules and regulations of the school system may face imprisonment for a period of up to one month and a fine of OMR 500, whether in public or private schools.

An official from the Ministry of Education confirmed exclusively to Times of Oman that, according to the School Education Law issued by Royal Decree No. 31/2023, any student who disturbs public order in a school or affects its educational activity, whether in public or private schools of all levels, is liable to a prison sentence of up to one month and a fine of up to OMR 500, or one of these two penalties.

The Official Gazette published today the School Education Law which includes 97 articles divided into ten chapters on the following topics: educational stages, special educational programs, educational environment, students, members of the teaching staff, the curriculum, penalties, and others.

The law also added that the Minister of Education, in accordance with the decree, is required to issue the executive regulations for the School Education Law and the regulations and decisions necessary to implement its provisions.
