Muscat: Men who dress up disguised as women in public will have to face imprisonment for a year and a fine of OMR 300 in the Sultanate of Oman.

Lawyer Salah Al-Muqbali explained exclusively to Times of Oman that Article (266/D) of the new Omani Penal Code stipulates that “He shall be punished with imprisonment for a period of no less than a month and not more than a year, and a fine of no less than OMR 100 and not more than OMR 300 , or one of these two penalties, whoever appears in public with the appearance of women in his dress or appearance.

Al-Muqbali indicated that the ruling is new because the old penal code that was cancelled did not explicitly address the existence of a penalty for this act, while the new penal code clearly clarified the penalty.

It is noteworthy that the Court of First Instance in Seeb issued for the first time in 2018 a ruling in accordance with the Omani Penal Code promulgated by Royal Decree No. 7/2018 , imprisoning three defendants of one of the Arab nationalities for one month and deporting them from the country after the end of their sentence after they were convicted of appearing as women in their guise , which is punishable by the text of Article (266/D) of the Omani Penal Code.
