Cyclone Shaheen: Oman's Ministerial Committee holds first meeting

Muscat: The Ministerial Committee that was tasked with assessing the damage caused by tropical cyclone Shaheen held its first meeting.

Council commends efforts by all sectors to bring normalcy in Oman


 The Council of Ministers has reviewed the efforts made by all sectors to restore normalcy in the affected areas by the tropical cyclone Shaheen.

"In an embodiment of the high interest of His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik on matters related to the affairs of the homeland and citizens, to preserve the safety of the people and residents in general, and with regard to follow-up on cyclone 'Shaheen' that affected many parts of the country, the Council of Ministers reviewed in its session today the efforts made by all sides and sectors to restore the situation to normal in the affected areas," Oman News Agency (ONA) said in a statement.

The Council of Ministers, expressed deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims and missing person, directs them to the Almighty to bestow his mercy on the deceased, and expressed thanks and appreciation for all the efforts that have contributed and still contributing to reduce the damages to the people and properties, which had a positive impact in alleviating the situation. The Council would like to mention the National Committee for Emergency Management, and all sectors of the state from the military, security and civil institutions and the private sector, in addition to the National Committee for Civil Defence, Meteorology and Media Devices.

In implementation of the royal directives to form a committee to assess the effects of climatic conditions, the council listened to an initial assessment regarding the situation and the steps that the committee intends to follow to accomplish the tasks entrusted to it.

The council appeals to all parties and sectors to cooperate in order to restore life to normal in the affected areas at the earliest.

"Pursuant to the Royal directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik to form a ministerial committee to assess the damages incurred to citizens’ homes and properties as a result of the tropical cyclone Shaheen, the committee held its first meeting today under the chairmanship of Sultan Salim Al Habsi, Minister of Finance, Chairman of the Financial and Economic Committee at the Council of Ministers," Oman News Agency (ONA) said in a statement.

It discussed the tasks of committees operating under the supervision of the National Committee for Emergency Management. Decisions have been taken to protect lives and restore normalcy in a direct and speedy manner through the supply of basic livelihood needs and resumption of public services in cyclone-stricken wilayats.

The services sector has been instructed to work in liaison with the competent authorities to speed up the process of road maintenance and restoration of services, bearing in mind the importance of securing public safety when reconnecting the electricity and telecommunication networks. It has also been agreed to mobilise the public health sector to address health and epidemiological issues.
 
About the operations of the shelter and relief sector, it has been agreed to activate a certain number of centres to collect and distribute commodities to families in coordination with Oman Charitable Organisation and teams of volunteers in the affected wilayats.
