Muscat: 800 species of trees native to Oman will be planted in Muscat and Salalah by employees of BP, to mark the opening of its Ghazeer gas field, well ahead of its scheduled start next October.
The first trees were planted by BP Oman president Yousuf Al Ojaili in Muscat. Planting will continue over the course of the next two months in Muscat and Salalah. Employees will be able to track their tree’s development via an online portal.
This project will help remove carbon emissions from the atmosphere, supporting BP’s net zero ambitions and enhancing biodiversity. The trees will also support Oman’s 2040 vision of environmental and natural resources supporting the national economy.
Al Ojaili commented, “The delivery of Ghazeer was a great milestone for BP and the Block 61 partnership. We wanted to find a sustainable and appropriate way to thank our employees for their efforts. The donation and maintenance of these trees will not only be an enduring legacy to the commitment and efforts of our team but will also contribute towards Oman’s environment for years to come.”
The tree planting will be coordinated by BP’s social investment partner, Qualies. BP will fund the initial maintenance of these trees until they can thrive independently.
