Muscat: Hundreds of plastic bottles have turned Masirah beaches blue.
Since last Sunday, plastic materials from a sunken vessel near the turtle nesting beaches have been washing ashore.
Environmentalists are now gathering for a massive clean-up on the Omani island.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs (MECA) confirmed the small ship was not carrying any hazardous materials.
The Environment Society of Oman (ESO) called via their twitter for an urgent cleanup campaign which started on Thursday morning and end Saturday to pick up the plastic trash.
In a post, ESO asked volunteers to arrange their own transportation and accommodation.
“Volunteers should wear appropriate clothes and shoes,” the ESO poster said, adding that sunglasses, sun lotions and hats are also recommended.
The meeting point will be next to the national ferries company’s office and volunteers will provided with bags, gloves and water, according to ESO.
