Oman accident: Two killed, one injured as truck falls off bridge in Hamriya

Muscat: Two people were killed in a tragic road accident when a truck of a food and water distribution company reportedly fell down from a bridge near Ruwi, an official from the company said.

The truck was on its way to Ruwi when it was reportedly driven off the bridge in Hamriyah around 12:15 pm.
“There were three people in the vehicle. One Omani driver and two Bangladeshi helpers. The Omani driver and one Bangladeshi helper died on the spot. The other Bangladeshi helper has been admitted to the hospital with severe injuries,” an official from the company said.
A police official also confirmed to the Times of Oman that two people had died and one was admitted to at the hospital after sustaining serious injuries.
According to the latest report published by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), traffic accidents in the Sultanate registered a significant 30.8 per cent drop in March, compared with the figures during the same month last year, with injuries falling by 21.8 per cent to 236, and fatalities declining by 1.2 per cent to 57.
However, compared with February, the number of injuries and deaths on the road was higher in March, with a total of 207 injuries and 45 deaths recorded in February.
In 2015, the total number of accidents on the Sultanate’s roads last year stood at 6,279 with 3,624 injuries and 675 deaths.
The report further noted that the number of Omani nationals, who died in accidents rose by 3.7 per cent to 40 in March, compared with same month of last year, while logging a 19.1 per cent drop in injuries suffered by nationals at 194.
In the case of expats, there was a 29.7 per cent fall in injuries to 42. Gender wise, only a single female expatriate was injured during an accident in March. In contrast, there were 41 male injuries in March, which however marked a fall of nearly 25 per cent from the figures reported during the same month last year.
