NRIs in Oman have to link PAN and Aadhaar cards by 31 December

Muscat: Non Resident Indians in Oman must link their Permanent Account Numbers (PAN) with their Aadhaar card by Tuesday, December 31, or face deactivation of their PAN cards, which means they cannot use it for financial transactions in India.
A statement from the Income Tax Department of India said, “The last date to link your PAN with the Aadhaar is December 31, 2019. Not linking your PAN with your Aadhaar on or before December 31, shall make your PAN inoperative. To do so, please visit www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.”
The previous deadline for the linking of the PAN and Aadhaar cards was September 30, but that has since been extended to the end of this year.
On March 31, in a statement issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes under the Ministry of Finance’s Department of Revenue, Commissioner of Income Tax Surabhi Ahluwalia said, “It has been reported in some sections of the media that those PANs which are not linked with Aadhaar number by March 31, 2019 may be invalidated.
“The matter has been considered by the central government and now the cut-off date for intimating the Aadhaar number and linking PAN with Aadhaar is September 30, 2019, unless specifically exempted.
“Notwithstanding the last date of intimating/linking of Aadhaar number with PAN being September 30, 2019, it is also made clear that with effect from April 01, 2019, it is mandatory to quote and link Aadhaar numbers while
filing the return of income, unless specifically exempted,” added Ahluwalia.
The procedure
Once on the site, those who wish to follow the procedure will need to select the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option on the left-hand side of the homepage, which will connect them to a site that requires them to enter their Aadhar and PAN details, as well as their name, as listed on the card.
Applicants will also need to enter a Captcha code, while visually challenged users can request an OTP to be sent to their mobile phones. Once done, users need to select the ‘Link Aadhaar’ button at the bottom, with the linking process only taking a few seconds. Once completed, users need to return to the home page, select the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option once again, enter their Aadhaar and PAN details and check the status of their application.
