Winners of Sultan Qaboos Award for Culture, Arts and Letters announced

Muscat: The Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science on Wednesday announced the winners of the Sultan Qaboos Award for Culture, Arts and Letters at its eighth session 2019. The award was presented this year to Arabs in general in the fields of sociology studies, culture and Arab music.
Habib bin Mohammed Al Riyami, Secretary-General of the Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science, said: “The award for Culture, Arts and Letters is an annual award that is alternatively given every two years, once to Omanis only and another time to Arabs in general. The award has become a valuable indicator of the cultural and artistic situation at local and Arab levels.”
He added that the award included this year three areas for Arabs in general: studies of sociology, Arab music and travel literature. He pointed out that in the field of sociology studies for the branch of culture, the award of this field has been withheld, and in the field of Arab music for the branch of arts the award has been given to Egyptian Singer Ali Ibrahim Ali Al Haggar, and in the field of travel literature in the Arts branch it was given to Basim Mohammed Furat, an Iraqi national who is a resident in New Zealand.
Habib bin Mohammed Al Riyami, Secretary-General of the Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science, said that the total number of applicants who met the requirements of this session reached 157, 78 candidates in the field of sociology studies, 27 candidates in the field of Arab music and 52 candidates in the field of travel literature.
It comes as part of the royal care of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said in the intellectual and knowledge achievement and an emphasis on the historical role of the Sultanate in the consolidation of cultural awareness; as the most important chain of human civilisation progress, and a support from His Majesty for intellectuals, artists and writers.
The application process started on Sunday, March 3rd, 2019 until Thursday, August 15th, 2019.
