Tehran: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe landed in Iran for his maiden visit to the Islamic Republic.
He is the first Japanese PM who will have a meeting with Ayatollah Khamenei in over four decades.
Abe was greeted by Iranian president Hassan Rouhani and they held talks, before giving a joint press conference.
Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono met with his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, on 12 June to pave the way for Abe’s visit.
Japan and Iran are marking the 90th anniversary of their diplomatic relationship this year.
