Philippine midterms: Duterte allies dominate Senate

Manila: Allies of President Rodrigo Duterte have won an overwhelming victory in the Philippine senatorial race, claiming the majority of seats at stake according to the final midterm results released by the Philippine Commission on Elections.

Nine candidates supported by Duterte were declared winners, taking nine of the 12 seats up for grabs. Not a single seat was taken by the country's liberal opposition, with Bam Aquino finishing in 14th place.

Allies of the president who won include Cynthia Villar, who received the most votes, Pia Cayetano, Imee Marcos, former Governor of Ilocos Norte and daughter of the late Dictator Ferdinand Marcos, and Roland dela Rosa, former head of the Philippine National Police.

Independents claimed the other seats, including the highly popular Grace Poe, Nancy Binay, daughter of former Vice President Jijomar Binay, and actor Lito Lapid.

Allies of Duterte now control 20 seats of the 24-seat upper house.
