Oman Cancer Association’s annual walkathon to be held next month

Muscat: Oman Cancer Association (OCA) announced that the 15th Annual Walkathon and Global October Pink Ribbon initiative will be held on October 30, as part of the national and global awareness campaign for breast cancer.
"Every year, the month of October is dedicated to raise awareness for breast cancer and to also remember the victims of breast cancer, their families and to further support and assist in the rehabilitation of cancer survivors," said Dr. Wahid Al Kharusi, President OCA.
"About 14 to 15 years ago, when we held the first walkathon, around 274 people participated. The participation grew every year and in 2017, more than 8,000 people participated in this drive," Al Kharusi said.
He added that the walkathon is held to introduce the concept of cancer through edutainment to children and youth and to expel the taboo surrounding the word cancer.
The theme of this year’s walkathon is 'I care' and the event will be held on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 from 4 pm to 6:30 pm at Qurum Municipal Park. It will be a two km walk.
To register, one can go directly to the OCA headquarters in Ghubra between 7:30 am and 2:30 pm (Sunday - Thursday), or visit these malls — Oman Avenues Mall, Muscat and Qurum City Centre, and Muscat Grand Mall — every Thursday from 6 pm to 10 pm, Friday 2 pm to 10 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 10 pm.
The registration fee for the walk is OMR 4 and participants will be given a t-shirt to wear on October 30, to show unity.
"We request more people to come forward and register for this year's walkathon. Join us and support the cancer advocacy campaign. Give strength to the victims and their families, and most importantly, let us demonstrate to the victims that they are not alone," Al Kharusi said.
