‘Syria, In the Shadows of Memory’

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, Bait Al Zubair is hosting an iconic collection of the Syrian photographer Fadi Masri Zada’s photographs at an exhibition, which will run till April 7.
The exhibition brings together an eclectic mix of selected pictures which will take us in a voyage of exploration and perusal of the land and people of Syria, between the years 1990 and 2003.
Fadi, an engineer working in Petroleum Development Oman, will take us from the columns and temples of Palmyra, to Busra, Aleppo and Old Damascus. We shall smell the fragrance of jasmines in Damascus and hear echoes of temple chants, church bells, and minarets’ calls to prayer.
We will hear the invitation of beauty coming from the dawn of civilisation, before we wake up to the realisation that it is only shadows in our memory.
Using his mastery of the technique of film photography, Fadi is taking us on a journey through scenes of life in all of its manifestations and transformations in that ancient land.
A critical witnessing, particularly now in the face of turmoil that threatens the very existence of Syria, of the evolving role of man in building a civilisation that began 8000 years ago, and continues into the twenty first century.
