Oman Cancer Association's annual walkathon will be held tomorrow

Muscat: Residents in Oman who are looking to actively contribute towards cancer research in the country are invited to take part in the Oman Cancer Association's (OCA) annual cancer walkathon.
Aimed towards raising funds to combat cancer in the country and raise awareness towards its harmful effects, this year's walkathon will take place on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, at Qurum Park, from 4 to 6 pm. The two-and-a-half kilometre walk has been given the theme 'A Walk For Life'.
"The cancer walk is dedicated to and is considered as a support to cancer patients and survivors," said OCA chairman Dr. Wahid Al Kharusi.
The brainhchild of four-time cancer survivor Yuthar Al-Rawahi, who began spadework to create the organisation in 1999, the Oman Cancer Association (OCA) is a non-profit association founded in 2002 and has been registered with the Ministry of Social Development since 2004.
Globally, October is known as breast cancer awareness month, with the OCA annually organising a pink ribbon breast cancer awareness drive to draw more attention towards breast cancer. OCA annually monitors this pink ribbon initiative by spreading awareness across all traditional media, social media, commercial centres, schools, colleges and private and public sector organisations.
The cancer walk aside, various other activities such as Zumba sessions and stage performances will also be organised tomorrow, and Al Kharusi is encouraging as many residents as possible to participate in the walk.
"We encourage children to attend as it is one of the ways in which generations learn how to live with cancer and view it as a common disease if diagnosed early," added Al Kharusi, "Our slogan is, regular check up and early detection saves lives."
