Oman fish exports register a healthy rise

Muscat: In 2016 the total quantity of fish landed stood at 279,610 tons as compared to 257,172 tons in 2015, according to the latest statistics issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
The total value of fish exported in 2016 stood at OMR58.821 million compared to OMR48.873 million in 2015.
The total quantity of fish exported increased to 114 tons in 2016 from 111 tons in 2015.
The total quantity of fish landed by traditional fishing sector in 2016 increased to 277,014 tons from 254,767 tons in 2015 while fish landed by commercial fishing declined to 163 tons in 2016 from 210 tons in 2015, the data showed.
Fish landings through coastal fishing increased to 2,330 tons in 2016 from 2,024 tons in 2015 while aquaculture contributed 103 tons to the total fish landings in 2016 compared to 170 tons in 2015. In 2016, the total number of renewed fishing licenses increased to 7,545 compared to 4,020 in 2015.
The number of new licenses issued in 2016 was 1,320 while 1,337 new licenses were issued in 2015, the NCSI data showed.
