Duqm: Duqm free zone has completed 16 per cent of the ninth five-year infrastructure projects, a senior official said. The five year plab is between 2016 and 2020.
Hussein Al Zadjali, head of the Building Projects Department at the Special Economic Zone Authority of Duqm (Sezad ), added that Sezad is working on the completion of infrastructure projects during the period set for them, pointing out that 48 per cent of these projects are currently being implemented, while 16 per cent are in the bidding stage and 7 per cent are in the operation and maintenance phase, in addition to 13 per cent that are in the stage of preparation for work volume and bidding equipment.
He was providing an update to local English-speaking media representatives during their visit to Duqm.
He pointed out that the estimated cost of these projects exceeds OMR700 million, adding that these projects will include completion of the remaining packages of the infrastructure projects for the Port of Duqm. It also includes the establishment of marine works for the fishing harbour, as well as a number of major and auxiliary roads, lighting and other projects.
Representatives of the media visited a number of economic projects as part of a tour organised by Sezad to familiarise them with the projects being implemented in the region.
Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed al-Abri, deputy chief executive officer of Oman Dry Dock Company for Operations, delivered a presentation at the Crowne Plaza Duqm Hotel in which he reviewed the objectives and strategies of the company and the services it provides. He said the dry dock will be capable of absorbing and repairing 200 ships annually, including the giant oil tankers.
Jalal Al Lawati, director of Promotion at Sezad , gave a presentation to the media about the importance of the geographic location of the Duqm region for the Sultanate in particular and in the world in general. He also talked about the incentives offered to investors in the Duqm Economic Zone, the largest region of its kind in the Middle East, as well as the general master plan of Duqm City, which includes many areas, such as heavy industries, medium industries, light industries, the Duqm Port, dry docks, the Duqm airport, tourist, residential, commercial, and logistic areas.
The media delegation also visited the Al Nahdha village in Duqm. The village is considered a housing project for workers in companies operating in the economic zone of Duqm. It can accommodate 16,000 people. The delegation also learned about the services provided at the village, which cost about OMR75 million.
The media delegation also visited the site of the Duqm refinery, the Sebacic acid production plant, the dry dock and 150 housing units, which were built as compensation for the families, as well as a visit to the rock garden.
