TRC shares COVID-19 innovations at UN science tech panel virtual meet

Muscat: The Research Council (TRC) participated via a virtual meeting in the twenty-third session of the UN’s Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD).
The virtual meeting of CSTD included the participation of Dr. Sharifa Al Harthy, Director of the Planning Department at TRC, Dr. Obaid Al Sa'eedi, Advisor at TRC, and Dr. Badr Al Hinai, Expert at TRC.
As part of the Omani delegation, Dr. Sharifa Al Harthy discussed how Oman used science, technology and innovation to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic; such as the implementation of the COVID-19 Research Programme at TRC, the creation of a range of locally engineered items designed to reduce the spread of the virus, such as respirator masks, face shields and hands-free door opening devices at Makers Oman, the implementation of the best application to monitor people diagnosed with COVID-19 competition at TRC’s Smart City Platform, and many more instances of the rise the status of Oman and Omanis in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Sharifa Al Harthy illustrated several examples on how Oman is fighting against the spread of COVID-19 through the use of science and innovation and reflected the importance of international collaboration and shared knowledge during such significant times.
The meeting also included several ministerial and high-level discussions and addressed two priority themes: harnessing rapid technological change for inclusive and sustainable development, as well as exploring space technologies for sustainable development and the benefits of international research collaboration in this context.
It also reviewed progress made in the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).
