Oman court issues ruling against two expats

Muscat: Salalah Court of First Instance recently has issued a court ruling against two expat workers for violating the Consumer Protection Law and its decisions.

A statement issued by the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) said, “The Consumer Protection Department in Salalah received a report about the expatriate workers distributing large quantities of chewing tobacco to stores in Salalah and the neighbouring wilayats.”

The statement explained, “As a result, the judicial arrest warrants investigated and monitored the suspects, as it was discovered that an expatriate worker from Asian nationality had manufactured and storing chewed tobacco on one of the farms in Salalah and distributing it to some stores in the wilayat and in all wilayats of the Dhofar Governorate by a special vehicle,” the statement added.

“Accordingly, an inspection warrant was obtained from the Public Prosecution and requested support from the Royal Oman Police, the site was raided, the accused were arrested, and the tools and materials for chewing tobacco were seized,” the statement added.

The statement pointed out that: “After collecting the evidence and completing the question in the violators, the administration took the necessary measures and the file was transferred after its completion to the Public Prosecution of Dhofar, who initiated the investigation and referred the file to the competent court that issued its ruling, which spent a period of two years imprisonment and final removal from the country with a fine of OMR 2000 and confiscation of the vehicle.”

Ali bin Salem Al Basrawi, Director of the Consumer Protection Department in Dhofar said, “The violators think that they are safe from the control of the supervisory authorities and the grip of the law, but that the authority has a lookout for them, as it works to take legal measures against violators in all areas that the authority is concerned with in order to serve the consumer and preserve his rights.”

“We thank the Public Prosecutor and the Royal Oman Police for their constant support to enable the authority to perform its duties.” Al Basrawi said.
