‘Linguawiz-2018’ tests literary skills of Indian school students

Muscat: In a first venture of its kind, Indian School Wadi Kabir (ISWK), under the guidance of its principal, D N Rao, recently organised ‘Linguawiz-2018’ for students attending Indian schools in Oman, in a bid with to encourage interest in literary quizzes among teenagers.
Ten teams from Indian schools, including Indian School Muscat, Indian School Darsait, Indian School Al Ghubra, Indian School Seeb, Indian School Mabela, Indian School Muladdha, Indian School Nizwa, Indian School Sohar, Indian School Salalah and the host school, ISWK, took part in the ‘Linguawiz-2018,’ an inter-school English Quiz competition.
Organised by Indian School Wadi Kabir (Department of English), the quiz made use of a smattering of linguistic activities to challenge the students’ knowledge about English literature. All seven rounds of the competition were named after lines written by Shakespeare.
Leaving no stone unturned, the English department at ISWK made great efforts under its department head, Roushni Mazumdar, to ensure the smooth conduct of the quiz. One of the most onerous tasks for the teachers was to prepare questions for the Rapid Fire round for each student, so that they were not at a disadvantage from their counterparts. It was a job executed to perfection.
The rounds were named as Spell Bee, Shakespeare, Harry Potter, identifying smudged cartoon characters, as well as audio and video clips from famous Shakespearean plays and English movies, which gripped the attention of the contestants throughout the competition. There was also an audience round filled with excitement and cheer. Even audience members received prizes, as many questions were thrown open to them.
With eclectic themes on platter, quizzers had to scratch their brains for correct answers. But thanks to their hard work and memory, they always delivered correct answers.
The hosts were lagging behind until the Rapid Fire round, when they kept their nerve and gave five correct answers to emerge as champions.
However, as the host school they did not compete for the trophy, which went to Indian School Darsait, which finished close behind. Indian School Sohar and Indian School Salalah were the first and second runners up, respectively
‘Linguawiz-2018’ was an initiative by ISWK to bring together keen contestants from all Indian schools, with the hope that this event would be eagerly awaited in the next academic year.
The event was also memorable, as the birthday of the Indian School Wadi Kabir Principal fell on the same day. A small cake cutting ceremony was organized to honour the principal for his contributions to the school.
A senior editor from ‘The Times of Oman’, was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Dr. Alex Joseph, Head of Academics, Board of Directors, was also present, along with Hala Jamal, the well-known Quiz Master.
The hall had been aptly decorated with placards and info-charts on legendary men and women of letters, as well as Nobel Laureates of English literature.
