Cricket: Oman cruise past Jersey in WCL Division 4 opener

Los Angeles: Swapnil Khadye’s gritty half-century powered Oman to a six-wicket win over Jersey on the first day of the ICC WCL Division 4 tournament at the Wong Cricket Field in Los Angeles.
Oman’s spinners kept Jersey, put in to bat, in check from the start with Nat Watkins, the opener, falling in the second over. Peter Gough, the captain, and Luke Gallichan then added 51 runs for the second wicket before the former was bowled by Amir Ali for 29.
Gallichan went on to make 48, and handy contributions from Anthony Hawkins-Kay (48 not out) and Corey Bisson (54 not out) lifted Jersey to 203 for 5. Khawar Ali, the legspinner, took 2 for 47 in ten overs, while Zeeshan Maqsood and Amir, the left-arm spinners, scalped one wicket apiece.
Zeeshan Maqsood (26) and Arun Poulose (35) got Oman’s chase off to a solid start with a 55-run opening stand.
Wicketkeeper Khadye, who walked in at No. 3, added 54 runs for the third wicket with Zeeshan Siddiqui and shared an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 51 with captain Ajay Lalcheta to see Oman across the line with 20 balls to spare.
Khadye’s unbeaten 117-ball 79 included five fours and two sixes and also earned him the well deserving man of the match award.
In another match at the Sevem Cricket Field, Timil Patel's five-wicket haul and half-centuries from Steven Taylor and Fahad Babar helped United States of America secure an eight-wicket win over Bermuda.
Opting to bat, Bermuda rode on Dion Stovell’s half-century to post 201 in 48.3 overs. Although six other Bermuda batsmen got into double figures, none of them could convert their starts into big scores. Stovell, who batted at No. 4, made 56 off 88 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes.
Patel, the legspinner, took 5 for 29 in 7.3 overs, while Jasdeep Singh’s medium pace fetched 2 for 40.
Taylor and Babar, the openers, got USA off to a rousing start, racing to 74 in ten overs. Taylor, who brought up his half-century in 36 balls, was dismissed by Cejay Outerbridge for 56. Babar went on to score an unbeaten 70, sharing a 95-run second wicket-stand with Ravi Timbawala (41), and an unbroken 32-run third-wicket stand with Timroy Allen (18 not out). USA thus raced to the 202-run target in just 32.4 overs.
Meanwhile, at the Wright Cricket Field, an all-round Denmark cruised to a 114-run win over Italy. Put in to bat, Denmark got off to a brisk start after Aftab Ahmed and Freddie Klokker put on 44 runs in six overs. But the openers were dismissed by the 10th over.
Hamid Shah and Zameer Khan steadied the innings with a 55-run third-wicket stand as Hamid (58) went on to score a half-century. Carl Sandri, the offspinner, ran through the Denmark middle order to reduce it to 140 for 6 on his way to figures of 3 for 30. But Hamid and Yasir Iqbal (44) associated for a 70-run eighth-wicket partnership to lift Denmark to 214 for 8.
Amjad Khan, the former England pacer, ran through Italy's top order in his opening spell to reduce it to 23 for 5 in nine overs. Sandri, who came in at No. 7, followed up his three-wicket haul with a 37-ball 59, studded with nine fours and two sixes, but found little support from rest of the line-up. Italy was eventually bowled out for 100 in 21.1 overs with Bashir Shah, the offspinner, mopping up the tail to claim 4 for 18. - ICC
