Breaking Barriers: Artists with disabilities shape Oman’s art scene

Muscat: A group of Omani artists with disabilities is redefining artistic expression, proving that physical challenges can be transformed into sources of inspiration and creativity. Through their emotionally charged paintings, these artists convey their personal experiences, aspirations, and social issues with remarkable artistic depth, strengthening their presence in Oman’s cultural and artistic landscape.

One of the pioneering initiatives in this field is the "Adati Hayati" group, the first of its kind in Oman. The artists in this collective have demonstrated that disability is not a barrier to creativity but rather a catalyst for perseverance and artistic exploration.

Their participation in exhibitions at prestigious venues such as Al Seeb Mall, the Royal Opera House, and Al Mouj Muscat has allowed them to share their artistic messages with the public. Their work is not only visually compelling but also carries a profound humanitarian and social message that resonates with audiences.

Among these artists is Afrah bint Khalfan Al Naabi, who sees her involvement in the group as a valuable source of professional and emotional support. "Being part of 'Adati Hayati' provides me with a supportive community and a space for artistic expression," she said. "This experience has helped me refine my skills and gain greater confidence in my abilities."

Similarly, Hassan bin Issa Al Raisi , a deaf artist, describes his journey: "Painting is my way of expressing emotions and challenges. I learned color-blending techniques in the United States, and I strive to share my artwork with the community to spread this heartfelt art."

Another artist, Mundhir bin Khamis Al Rahbi, also from the deaf community, recalls his passion for painting and photography, which began in childhood and developed through local and international training programs. He emphasizes that art has given him a powerful means of self-expression, and his participation in exhibitions has strengthened his ability to connect with others.

The growing presence of artists with disabilities in Oman’s art scene reflects the country’s commitment to nurturing talent and supporting marginalized groups. This initiative reinforces the principles of social empowerment and raises public awareness about the value of human creativity.
