First-ever Histology and Cytology Conference organised in Oman

Muscat: It was a monumental occasion for the Oman’s medical community as it hosted the first-ever Histology and Cytology Conference, titled ‘Leica Day’ at the JW Marriott Hotel in Muscat.

Themed ‘Advancing Histopathology for a Healthier Oman: Insights and Innovations by Omani & Leica Experts’, the event brought together leaders and professionals from across the Sultanate’s healthcare spectrum.

The conference witnessed participation from prestigious institutions such as the Royal Hospital, Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Military Medical City, Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre, Khoula Hospital, as well as the Ministry of Health and several private healthcare giants.

The Chief Guest, Sayyid Said bin Sultan bin Ya`arub Al-Busaidi, graced the occasion and underlined the significance of this historic gathering for the future of healthcare in Oman.

The event was inaugurated by Adil Muneeb Rana, the Managing Partner of MedGene Technologies LLC, Oman, who set the tone with an insightful opening speech.

Rana emphasised the importance of bringing together global expertise and local talent to revolutionise histopathology practices in Oman.

Following this, Dr. Elif Yaman from Leica Biosystems delivered a captivating talk on the efficiency of Leica’s workflow solutions, highlighting how cutting-edge technology is paving the way for seamless histopathological processes.

The event’s high point came with an award ceremony recognising the contributions of key opinion leaders (KOLs) from across the nation.

Dr. Fatema Al Lawati, a leading figure from the Royal Hospital, took the stage with a compelling presentation on Quality Assurance and Standardisation in Histopathology, addressing the critical need for maintaining high standards to ensure accurate diagnostic results.

The conference continued with a series of informative and interactive presentations. Hossam Ayham from Leica Biosystems explored Leica’s role as a pivotal partner in Digital Pathology, showcasing the advancements in automation and artificial intelligence that are transforming diagnostics.

Dr. Radiya Al Ajmi shared her expertise on Molecular Diagnostics of Lung Cancer, a crucial topic given the rising cases of cancer in the region. Nadine Engel from Leica Biosystems then provided an in-depth analysis of Automated Molecular Pathology: BOND beyond IHC, highlighting the latest innovations in integrated diagnostic platforms.

The agenda was enriched further by Jose Ruivo, who discussed Core Histology Solutions, emphasising the technological advancements that are now available to histology labs.

His talk was complemented by Kifah Abu Nar, who detailed the latest developments in Advanced Staining Solutions, pivotal in improving diagnostic accuracy and workflow efficiency.

Attendees were encouraged to engage directly with experts during the interactive device demonstration session, which showcased cutting-edge products such as the Bond Max, GT450, Pearl, AXL, tome, and Acc. The hands-on experience allowed participants to ask questions and witness the technology that is redefining histopathology in action.

Dr. Hunaina Al Kindi presented fascinating case studies, further enriching the knowledge exchange at the event. She demonstrated how advanced histological techniques can lead to better patient outcomes, particularly in complex diagnostic scenarios.

The day’s presentations concluded with a forward-looking talk by Dr. Nasser Al Rahbi on the Implementation of Advanced Pathology in Oman Healthcare Systems, underscoring the importance of adopting innovative pathology solutions in enhancing the overall healthcare landscape of the Sultanate.

The closing remarks were delivered by Maj. Said Al Hashami, Managing Partner of MedGene Technologies, who expressed his gratitude to all speakers and participants for their valuable contributions. He reiterated the significance of such collaborations between local and international experts to advance Oman’s healthcare system.
