Muscat: The National Committee for Emergency Management announced the activation of the National center for Emergency Case and its affiliated sectors and subcommittees in the governorates expected to be affected by Al Rayyan Depression.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) also announced that, the cellular early warning system is currently being operated and activated for alerts about the weather condition that will affect the Sultanate of Oman from Friday, March 8, 2024 to Sunday, for attention and caution.
According to weather update issued by CAA,
The latest forecasts and analyzes of the National Multi-Hazards Early Warning Center indicate that the chances of rain of varying intensity will continue during this day, Friday, and its intensity will increase tomorrow, Saturday, in the governorates of Musandam, Al-Buraimi, North Al-Batinah, Al-Dhahirah, Al-Dakhiliyah, South Al-Batinah, Muscat, North Al-Sharqiyah, and South Al-Sharqiyah, and the intensity will continue with varying intensity on Sunday, as well.”
This condition is expected to be accompanied by: Heavy to very heavy rain (30-150 mm) may lead to torrential runoff of reefs and valleys (wadis). Associated with Active downward winds (15-50 knots) may cause unstable materials to fly, and heavy hailstones may cause damage to property and vehicles.
Sea waves will rise to rough waves (2-4) meters on most coasts. The Civil Aviation Authority advises all to take utmost caution and not to risk crossing valleys.
Abdullah bin Rashid Al Khaduri, Director General of Meteorology at the Civil Aviation Authority, told the Oman News Agency: Activating SMS system comes for the first time and officially in conjunction with the expected weather condition that will affect the Sultanate to pay attention and take caution. Alerts will be sent before and during the weather condition in the affected governorates.
