Muscat: Activities of Oman Sustainability Week 2023 kicked off on Monday at Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC).
The event, which is expected to attract 7,000 participants and over 100 speakers, aims to increase awareness on issues related to sustainability and related concepts. Many experts in the fields of energy, the environment and water resources are taking part in the event.
Oman Sustainability Week highlights the importance of sustainable practices, preserving natural resources and achieving sustainability in the fields of energy and water resources.
The event is hosted by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals in cooperation with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO). It includes various activities, namely the International Sustainability Resources and Technology Conference (ISRTC), organized by Be’ah company and the SPE Gaia Summit on thought leadership, organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers. Various discussion panels are also held on topics related to industry, sustainability and the future of energy.
Further, the event includes a programme by Shell Oman company (Shell NXplorer), consisting of 10 presentations of innovative projects by students from 10 schools in Oman. The projects focus on developing solutions to overcome challenges related to providing clean energy.
The opening ceremony was held under the auspices of Mohsen Hamad Al Hadhrami, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals.
Al Hadhrami said that in light of the rapid developments and transformations taking place in the world, the importance of sustainability and practices aimed at preserving the environment and different resources comes into prominence.
He pointed out that Oman Sustainability Week focuses on the importance of issues related to sustainability and raising awareness, especially on topics related to reducing carbon emissions, preserving natural resources, water resources and energy, as well as increasing awareness about concepts related to hydrogen and technologies associated with renewable energy.
Al Hadhrami added that Oman Sustainability Week is a national platform aimed at highlighting the commitment of the Sultanate of Oman to achieving leadership in the field of sustainability. It is, he affirmed, an opportunity to exchange experiences and knowledge and it includes the latest sustainability technologies, solutions and initiatives from all over the world, which will contribute to efforts exerted towards enabling sustainability through innovative strategies that are in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
On his turn, Eng. Abdulamir Hussein Al Ajmi, External Affairs and Value Creation Director at PDO said that the event highlights the importance of cooperation between various public and private establishments to achieve sustainability in various operations and projects.
An environmental exhibition is held on the sidelines of Oman Sustainability Week to showcase the latest technologies and solutions in the field of sustainability.
