Doha: The Sultanate of Oman has underscored the significance of adhering to international cooperation towards meeting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as all pledges made to maintain balanced growth within the context of social, economic and environmental development.
During its speech at the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5), held in Doha, Oman affirmed that it incorporated all three dimensions of sustainable development into Oman Vision 2040 and its long-term sectoral strategies. The speech was delivered by Dr. Said Mohammed Al Saqri, Minister of Economy.
Oman pointed out that its participation in this conference stems from a deep conviction in the importance of partnership and cooperation to achieve the requirements of sustainable development, mainly out of respect for commitment to international agreements and covenants.
The conference offers an opportunity for countries to work side by side to exchange experiences and discuss solutions for common problems, said Oman, noting that the event consolidates global efforts to provide the best means of support to the least developed countries.
The overall aim is to open wider scopes for those countries to eradicate poverty, boost their role in international trade and regional integration, and utilize their resources to realize comprehensive development and ensure sustainable development for all, Oman stressed in the speech.
Oman urged all countries to maximize efforts to help needy countries terminate acts of conflict and violence and concentrate, instead, on combating poverty. Oman also encourages developed countries and international financial institutions, like the International Monetary Fund, to undertake initiatives to finance development and reconstruction plans in least developed countries. The measures envisaged by Oman in this context include debt repayment and debt restructuring.
Oman expressed its appreciation and thanks for all parties that contributed to the conference which, it hoped, would forge greater international collaboration to achieve sustainable development in least developed countries.
