Muscat: An administrative fine of OMR 1,000 has been imposed on an expat for selling chewing, non-smoking tobacco in the Wilayat of Sur, South Al Sharqiyah Governorate.

Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) said: "The Consumer Protection Department in Sur recently arrested an expatriate worker who sells chewing, non-smoking tobacco, as part of the authority's efforts to combat behaviours that have a negative impact on the health and safety of society and to control perpetrators and hold them accountable in accordance with the Consumer Protection Law."

During their field visits to shops and markets in the wilayat, the judicial control officers arrested the expatriate worker and found tobacco in a house in the middle of a residential neighbourhood in the Wilayat of Sur. Selling tobacco to consumers is in violation of the Consumer Protection Law in accordance with Resolution No. (256/2015) amended by Resolution No. (301/2016) regarding banning the circulation of chewing, non-smoking tobacco in any form and under any name

Accordingly, legal measures were taken against the expat, as an administrative fine of OMR 1,000 was imposed. The authority said that it will spare no efforts in following up and monitoring the markets and controlling everything that may harm the health and safety of consumers.

The Authority will also work to take all legal measures against violators. It also calls on consumers to report any abuses they may notice through the authority’s various communication channels.
