Fischer-Price recalls 5 million sleepers due to infant deaths

Muscat: Nearly 5 million Rock N Play sleepers produced by toy manufacturer Fisher-Price have been recalled after more than 30 infants died.

A total of 4.7 million Fisher-Price Rock ‘N Play Sleepers have been recalled due to reports of infant deaths, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

On April 12 Fisher-Price announced the discontinuation and recall of the sleepers in a statement saying, "Putting safety first, in partnership with the CPSC, Fisher-Price issued a voluntary recall of our Rock ‘n Play Sleepers. All product use should be discontinued."

In a statement, the company said, "Today, Fisher-Price is announcing the voluntary recall of all units of our Rock n Play Sleepers due to reported incidents of infant fatalities that occurred in Rock n Play Sleepers, after the infants rolled over while unrestrained, or under other circumstances."

"While we continue to stand by the safety of all our products, we have decided in partnership with the Consume rRPoduct Saftey Commission, that this voluntary recall is the best course of action," the company added.

This comes after added pressure from agencies such as the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP), "The Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleeper has been recalled. Parents should stop using this product immediately. The only safe environment for a baby to sleep is on her back on a separate, firm, flat sleep surface without any bedding or bumpers."

An investigation by the independent NGO Consumer Reports linked the Fisher-Price Rock n Play Sleeper to at least 32 infant deaths.
