#OmanPride: British resident gets award for boosting ties with Oman

Muscat: British resident, Maggie Jeans, has been awarded Order of the British Empire at the Queen’s 90th birthday in the honours list released on Friday.
The citation is for boosting Omani-UK relations. Maggie is Partner and Director of Al Manahil International LLC and Educational Consultancy. She came to Oman from Bristol in January 1990 with her husband, Professor William Dampier Jeans, who helped establish the Radiology Department at Sultan Qaboos University.
She also worked at the University as Education Officer in the College of Medicine, where she set up the Overseas Elective Programme for students among other things. Many of their former students are now heading up departments in Oman hospitals.
“Muscat is a very supportive and special place. I am delighted to receive this award on behalf of a whole host of people and I am determined to work to reinforce the special ties that already exists between Oman and the UK. I would also like to acknowledge the support of my husband in everything I have done, although sadly he died in November last year,” she said.
“Oman is in many ways a young country reborn in 1970 so, of course, there have been challenges and frustrations but I think that being a woman here actually has many advantages in terms of getting things done,” she added.
In 1996 she set up Al Manahil which specialises in the supply of books and educational material to the government and private sector. Maggie has run the British Business Forum www.bbfoman.org for many years which aims to promote UK/Oman business links. She is keen to emphasis that this recognition belongs to the Oman community.
