Why are cyclones increasing in Oman?

Muscat: Cyclones in Oman are likely to increase due to climate change, said the Director of the Centre for Environmental Studies and Research at Sultan Qaboos University.

"Cyclone activity in the Arabian Sea will increase in the coming period at record and violent levels. Extreme weather phenomena such as Cyclone Gonu may become repetitive due to climate change," Dr. Yassin Al Sharabi, Director of the Centre for Environmental Studies and Research at Sultan Qaboos University.

He added in an interview with Oman tv: "Global warming gases and short-term climate pollutants have dangerous effects on the climate, the reason why we are recording continuous rise in temperatures, decrease in the amount of annual rainfall, and an increase in heat waves in Oman."

The Director of the Centre for Environmental Studies and Research at Sultan Qaboos University explained: "Climate change will affect many regions in Oman, and we have presented several studies aimed at accelerating the pace of confronting the challenges that may arise."
