Muscat: Learning and practicing yoga will help boost people’s immunity, and help ward off the effects of COVID-19, the ambassador of India to Oman has said.

Speaking to TFM’s Evita Louis ahead of the International Day of Yoga, which falls on 21 June every year, ambassador Munu Mahawar invited everyone interested in learning yoga to join the virtual community event scheduled for 5pm on 19 June.

“Yoga is something that has found universal acceptance,” he said. “Millions of people have made it a way of life, and in Oman also, it is immensely popular. In 2019, when we celebrated International Day of Yoga, more than 6,000 persons participated under one roof – it was one of largest gatherings anywhere in the world.

“Last year, we had to switch online due to COVID, and this year as well, we will be doing it virtually,” added the ambassador. “We have organised a number of events in the run-up to the main event, which we will hold on 19 June at 5pm. I take this opportunity to invite everyone to join us, it will be great to have everyone with us to jointly celebrate this occasion.”

Explaining how yoga helps boost the immune system, Mahawar said, “Yoga is something that helps develop strong immunity. In our fight against COVID, while precautions and vaccinations against COVID are essential, if we practice yoga, it will help develop our immunity more effectively counter the effects of the COVID pandemic.

“Let me take this opportunity to thank the government of Oman and His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik, for their assistance towards the community in general, and for their support towards International Day of Yoga,” he said.
