Muscat: The current epidemiological situation in Oman indicates that the number of Covid-19 cases exceeded 2000 and an average 35 intensive care units (ICU) admissions were recorded in a day.

Dr. Amal bint Saif Al-Ma'ni, Senior Consultant, Infectious Diseases and Infection Control, the Ministry of Health said in an interview with Oman TV: “The epidemiological curve indicates that the number of cases in the Sultanate exceeded 2000. For the first time, we recorded around 180 admissions within 24 hours and an average of 35 intensive care units (ICU) admissions a day.”

Al-Ma'ni added that the death toll is also an indicator of the overload and the pressure health care units are facing.

“The Delta variant is present in many countries and not just in Oman, in fact, 91 per cent of the cases in the United Kingdom, in spite of vaccination, were from the Delta variant, which was first recorded in India,” added Dr. Amal.

While all vaccines approved in the Sultanate are effective, Al-Ma'ni stressed the full effect of the vaccine is only obtained after two weeks of taking the second dose.

“One must take basic protective measures like washing your hands, wearing a mask, and social distancing, even after vaccination,” she advised.
