Muscat: Motorists found intentionally driving in the wrong direction on roads can face fines of up to OMR500, as well as three months in jail.
According to Oman’s Public Prosecution, people found guilty of this traffic offence can face either one or both of these punishments.
The same sentence can also be handed down for “disclosing to the concerned authorities false information, submitting incorrect documents, or deliberately establishing incorrect details in forms or applications stipulated in the Traffic Law, its regulations and related decisions,” according to the government body.
Furthermore, driving someone else’s vehicle without a valid insurance policy can also land people in jail for 10 days, and a fine of OMR300, as can the offence of people throwing litter from a vehicle with the purpose of littering.
“Committing any act against public decency inside a vehicle is an offence punishable by imprisonment for a period up to three months and a fine that extends to OMR500, or either one of these two sentences,” added Public Prosecution. Overtaking on a hard shoulder – the area of the right of the road separated from the rest of it by a yellow line – and designated for emergency stops, is also an act that can lead to fines and imprisonment.
“Overtaking at road shoulders without an acceptable justification is an offence punishable by imprisonment for a period up to two months and a fine that extends to OMR500, or either one of these two sentences,” added the Public Prosecution.
