Muscat: The number of cases received by Public Prosecution decreased by more than 15 per cent in 2020 compared to the previous year.
According to data shared by Public Prosecution at its annual conference, 23,831 cases were received by Public Prosecution in 2020, a decrease of 18 per cent compared to 2019, when the number of cases was 28,920. However, February 2020 witnessed an increase in the number of cases, reaching 2,623. The least number of cases was in April 2020, at 850.
Public Prosecution said: "Last year, the number of defendants reached 30,068, of which 2 per cent were minors, 89.8 per cent were male, and 37.6 per cent were foreign defendants."
Public Prosecution confirmed: "The percentage of executed judgments in 2020 was 10,699, with a decrease of 8 per cent compared to 2019, when the number of executed judgments reached 11,678, and the number of un-executed judgments reached 1,275 in 2020, with a decrease of 0.16 per cent compared to 2019, where the number of un-executed judgments reached 1,277."
"Cheque crimes are among the most common crimes in 2020, at a rate of 20.7 per cent, followed by crimes of violations against the labour law at a rate of 11.5 per cent, and then come crimes of violating the law and residence by foreigners by 10.8 per cent, while fraud crimes were the least frequent crimes in 2020, at 5 per cent.
