You could face jail time for using a mobile phone while driving in Oman

Muscat: A punishment of 10 days imprisonment and a fine of OMR 300 will be imposed on anyone who holds a mobile phone in their hands or holds any other electronic device while driving.

A statement issued online by Public Prosecution said: "Using the hand to hold a mobile phone or any other electronic device while driving is an offence punishable by imprisonment for up to 10 days and a fine that extends to OMR 300."

A punishment of two months imprisonment and /or a fine of OMR 500 will be imposed in case of overtaking at road shoulders without an acceptable justification.

Public Prosecution said: "Traffic law in Oman defines hard shoulder as a part of motorway, which is situated on the right side and designed for emergency stop. Overtaking at road shoulders without an acceptable justification is an offense punishable by imprisonment for a period up to two months and a fine that extends to OMR 500 or by either one of these two sentences. "
