Cheaper baggage fee planned by Oman Air

Muscat: From January, Oman Air passengers will be able to check in only one 30 kg suitcase per person, but the price for being overweight in your luggage will be slashed.
However, business class, first class and economy class passengers holding Oman Air's Gold and Silver cards will get concessions in the new baggage rules.
All passengers travelling on Oman Air flights can carry only one checked-in bag weighing no more than 30kg, the airline has announced.
“This 30kg cannot be split into two or three pieces,” an airline official clarified.
Passengers turning up for flights with excess baggage will be charged OMR20 for the first additional 20kg of extra weight, or a reduced tariff of OMR16 if the additional baggage is paid for in advance online. That’s around OMR1 per kilo.
Currently, excess baggage fees are much higher.
“Passengers travelling in business and first class will be permitted one extra bag with a maximum weight of 20kg, increasing to 30kg for passengers with valid Gold and Silver Sindbad cards,” the official said, while passengers travelling Economy class with valid Gold and Silver Sindbad cards will be permitted one extra bag with a maximum weight of 20kg.
Oman Air’s current pricing for additional baggage will be replaced with an ‘additional piece’ system whereby passengers will be able to pay for additional baggage with a maximum weight of 20kg per piece at check-in. Each additional piece will be charged at OMR20 at the airport, or OMR16 if booked online.
Additionally, Oman Air will introduce pricing for specialist luggage which includes items such as pets, sporting equipment and anything above the stated dimensions of 158cms.
To begin with, Oman Air will offer promotional pricing at just OMR16, if purchased online in advance for certain destinations.
Pre-purchased items will save up to 20 per cent as opposed to excess baggage purchased at the airport.
The above measures represent Oman Air’s efforts to make excess baggage fees more affordable for passengers, the airline said in a statement.
There is no change in hand baggage allowance, which remains the same.
In the First and Business Class sections, two pieces can be carried by each passenger of 14kg each and a maximum dimension of linear 115cms (45inches).
Those travelling in the Economy Class can carry one piece per passenger, weighing up to 7kg and a maximum dimension of linear 115cms (45inches).
The airline added that the final details on pricing and promotions will be released closer to the launch.
