More than 75,000 housing units lie vacant in Muscat

Muscat: More than 75,000 housing units, inclusive of both flats and villas, currently lie vacant in Muscat Governorate, according to government data.

77,233 units are currently unoccupied in the capital, according to the 2020 e-census carried out by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). A further 33,815 are only used intermittently, which means more than 100,000 units are not fully utilised in the capital.

However, some 300,985 units of the 412,033 present in the capital – nearly 75 percent – are being fully utilised, according to census data.

75 percent of all homes in Muscat are also constructed for residential purposes, with another 23.2 for profit. A small portion (2.1 percent) have been allocated to non-profit organisations.

Numbers show that 42.6 percent of housing units are in apartment buildings, and about 32.1 percent are villas.

The largest numbers of buildings in the capital by wilayat are found in Seeb (12.58 percent), where 165,125 units are present in 68,455 buildings. 8.08 percent of units are in Boushar, which has 106,018 homes in 29,888 buildings.

Muttrah is home to another 5.88 percent of housing accommodation in the country (77,110 units, 20,616 buildings). The smallest numbers of buildings are in Al Amerat (3.22 percent, amounting to 42,260 units and 23,221 buildings), while Quriyat has another 1.12 percent of homes in the country, at 14,652 housing units and 11,990 buildings.

The Wilayat of Muscat accounts for just half a percent of residential buildings in the capital, with 6,868 units in 4,748 buildings.
