Oman's Human Rights Commission releases data on violations

Muscat: The Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC), has dealt with 5 reports on physical safety cases in the Sultanate in 2020.

The OHRC's annual report said: "Violence and physical abuse are serious violations of human rights. When OHRC detects a report of this kind, it verifies the facts of the matter and listens to all parties."

OHRC has received a report on April 16, 2020 about an Omani girl’s allegation that she was a victim of physical and verbal abuse by her family. The girl also alleged that the family was depriving her from pursuing university education and restricting her freedom. The Public Prosecution Department was approached and the problem was resolved. The girl is now pursuing her university education and enjoying her full rights.

On the same issue, OHRC received a communication on August 10, 2020 stating that the family of an Omani girl was restricting her freedom. After verifying the allegations and maintaining coordination with the Public Prosecution Department, it became evident that these allegations were not true. It was found that her father had prevented her from excessive use of her phone to play an electronic game for long hours.

"The father believed that these long hours spent on an online game would have negative health effects," OHRC added in its report.

In other case, OHRC followed up on a report received on September 15, 2020, about the allegation made by a domestic worker that she was forced to engage in a smuggling attempt and do things that are contrary to morals and public order. The OHRC contacted the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking and explained the case to take all necessary legal measures.

OHRC said: "The specialists summoned the worker and the employer for investigation. The problem was addressed according to the procedures in force in this regard."
