Muscat: The presence of a third operator will make the three companies compete to attract users, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology stated.

“In the field of communications and information technology, quality and price are important, and the presence of a third operator will make the three companies compete to attract users, and we hope that there is a third operator so that benefits will spread to users and companies, as they know their income comes from subscribers, said Eng. Saeed Al Maawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology.

“The ministry will launch the Sultanate’s space policy in the current year, and it is hoped that the Omani satellite will be launched in 2024 to serve the public and private sectors, and it will be used in the telecommunications, cybersecurity and other fields to be researched and studied.”

More than 80 per cent of the Sultanate’s digital economy is based on the telecommunications sector. The vision of the ministry is to create an integrated system for transportation, communication, information technology and social welfare.

“There are a number of small and medium companies operating in the field of space in the Sultanate, and we are working to establish a space club to increase the culture of society in this field and to define ways to benefit from it,” the minister added that, the ministry has embraced emerging technology companies whose revenues have reached OMR7 million.”

According to the Minister, the Sultanate is ranked 24th globally, the second in the Arab world in the e-services development index, “We thank the ministry’s employees and our colleagues in other government units, and what has been achieved in digital transformation is very good, as Oman is ranked 50th globally in the e-government development index,” he said.

Adding that: “More than 80 percent of the Sultanate’s digital economy is based on the telecommunications sector. The vision of the ministry is to create an integrated system for transportation, communication, information technology to achieve social welfare.”

The Ministry seeks to create a suitable number of jobs every five years and to score 65 points in network readiness, which makes the Sultanate among the best forty countries around the world.
The Sultanate has made remarkable progress in the field of cybersecurity, as it is ranked second in the Arab world and 16 globally.

He explained: “When cyber attacks occur, we are compelled to preserve the information, unless the source of attacks is identified.

“If the information is published, it may be used for future attacks. Information is published only after our investigations are complete, so that the international community can benefit from what we’ve published, in keeping with global agreements.”
