Oman aims to increase fish production in coming years

Muscat: The Sultanate is aiming to reach a fish production target of 1.34 million tons by 2025, the Director General of Fish Resources Development said on Tuesday. To achieve this goal, a commercial fishing fleet development plan has been put in place.

A statement issued online by Oman News Agency (ONA), said: "The Fisheries Laboratory opened in 2017, has announced more than 90 initiatives and projects that include three main activities; commercial and artisanal fishing, fish farming and processing and export."

Dr. Abdulaziz bin Saeed Al Marzouqi, Director General of Fish Resources Development said that he expects that the fisheries sector’s contribution to the GDP will reach OMR 387 million, and that 8,509 direct jobs will be created by the same year, with investments estimated at about OMR 447 million.

The fisheries sector is one of the main sectors that works to promote economic diversification programs due to its potential as a renewable resource, and contributes to food security and job opportunities for citizens.
