Oman reports first mutant COVID-19 strain

Muscat: Oman reported the first case of a new coronavirus strain in a resident who returned from the United Kingdom.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health said, “All procedures have been applied to deal with the infected person.”

“The Ministry of Health has announced the registration of the first case of the genetic mutation virus of the COVID-19 disease in Oman, which was recently announced in the United Kingdom and many other countries.”

“The ministry indicated that the genetic mutation of the COVID-19 disease was diagnosed in a resident who came to the Sultanate from the United Kingdom and showed respiratory symptoms while undergoing health isolation. The COVID-19 tests of the patient before his arrival and on arrival in the Sultanate are negative,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the Sultanate reached 129,774, while the number of recoveries stood at 122,406, comprising 94.3 per cent.

The total number of COVID-19 related deaths stood at 1,502, the Ministry of Health said.

The Ministry also pointed out that 12 cases were hospitalized over the past 24 hours, adding that the total number of current hospitalized Covid-19-infected patients stands at 70, of them 26 are in intensive care units (ICU).
