WHO unveils new plan to fight influenza

Geneva: The World Health Organisation (WHO) unveiled its new plan to treat nearly 1 billion cases of influenza every year to protect against a real threat of a pandemic disease.
“The question is not whether another epidemic will happen, but when will it happen?” Warned WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus during the announcement of the revised Global Influenza Strategy for 2019-2030.
According to the WHO, influenza is one of the biggest public health challenges in the world, where the virus causes between 290,000 and 650,000 deaths per year.
The WHO plan, which will last for 11 years, focuses on formulating strong national programs with three goals: reducing seasonal influenza and the risk of animal-to-human transitions.
