Expats in Oman arrested for electronic fraud

Muscat: Seven expats have been arrested by the Royal Oman Police (ROP), on charge of electronic fraud.

A statement issued online by ROP said: "Muscat Governorate Police Command, in cooperation with the General Department of Investigations and Criminal Investigations, arrested seven expatriates on charges of electronic fraud."

"The criminal method used was to send text messages via mobile phone to a group of people that includes a fake request by a bank to call the phone number attached to the message to activate their bank cards and during the call, bank data was taken from the victims and the fraudsters would withdraw money from their accounts."

"The Royal Oman Police called on people not to be lead on by anonymous messages, communications or links and not to provide anyone with any personal data, such as the credit card number, the password and the bank account number," the statement added.
