Oman joins world in celebrating International Tent Pegging Day

Muscat: The International Tent Pegging Federation (ITPF) today celebrated World Tent Pegging Day, which falls on 27 October.

The international federation launched a visual competition on its official social communication page and formed a committee under the chairmanship of Haitham bin Mohammed al-Lawatia, Secretary-General of the International Tent Pegging Federation.

Participation in the first part of the competition relates to sending video clip or modern photo of tent pegging sport that meets international criteria on safety of horses and contestants.

The second part of the competition deals with documentation of the sport before the inception of the International Tent Pegging Federation on 27 October 2013.

The competition was well received and it evoked good response among the sport’s lovers. The number of followers of the federation’s page on social media went up considerably.

The International Tent Pegging Federation has taken the Sultanate as venue since its inception. It took giant strides in spreading the sport, raising the number of its member states from the time of its announcement from 19 to 39 countries from different continents of the world.

The coming period is expected to see more countries joining the federation, which has organized three world cups, so far: in 2014 (Oman), 2016 (Egypt) and 2018 (UAE).

To upgrade the pace of dissemination of the sport, the international federation organized the first international beach tent pegging championship in 2017 in the Wilayat of Masirah. It organised the first international women’s tent pegging championship in 2018 in the Sultanate, the Governorate of Musandam. It also organized the first international military championship in 2019 in Jordan. This is in addition to other types of championships and training programmes.
