Over 15 types of whales live in Oman

Muscat: More than 15 types of whales and dolphins live in the seas of Oman, the Environment Authority said.

A statement issued online by Environment Authority said: "Whales and dolphins are important marine organisms in the seas of the Sultanate, as they are very sensitive to environmental disturbances and negative human activities, making them important indicators of the quality and health of marine ecosystems."

"The coasts of the Sultanate extend for more than 3,000 km and overlook three seas, which are the Sea of Oman, the Arabian Sea and the Arabian Gulf, and this unique location of the Sultanate gives it a variety of food chains needed from marine organisms, including large mammals."

"According to data released by Environment Authority, there are 20 species of great whales and dolphins in the Sultanate, divided between 14 types of dolphins and 6 types of baleen whales and a toothed whale."
