Three citizens sentenced to jail term in Oman

Muscat: Two citizens will face a jail term of 3 months, pay a fine of OMR 800 each and have their driving licenses suspended for 6 months for demonstrating their vehicles in non-designated spots and damaging vegetation cover in Dhofar, Public Prosecution said.

A court of first instance convicted the citizens for having committed these acts of misdemeanor. "The court accorded punishment of two months imprisonment and a fine of OMR 300 for the first charge and a month in prison and a fine of OMR 500 for the second. They will also be assigned to perform a public service like afforestation work in the wilayat for a month, working 4 hours a day," Public Prosecution said in a statement.

In another case in South Sharqiyah governorate, a court has convicted a citizen for publishing content online with the intent to harm public order. The device was confiscated and the person sentenced to a 1 year jail term of which one month would be executed. A fine of OMR 1,000 has also been imposed. "The convict intended in his writings published on WhatsApp to provoke public unrest, ridicule national efforts exerted and deny the role played by the country's institutions," a statement said.
