Insulting national currency is a punishable offence in Oman

Muscat: Anyone who insults or contempts the national currency shall be punished by imprisonment for a period not exceeding ten months and a fine of not more than OMR 300 will be imposed, a lawyer in Oman said.

The lawyer Salah Al Meqbali spoke exclusively to Times of Oman about the phenomenon of presenting the amount of money for dowries in the form of clippings or sums wrapped in flower bouquets, "The phenomenon of presenting a mint of money for dowries in the form of clippings or the form of sums wrapped in flower bouquets is classified as a contempt for the national currency and is punishable by Omani law."

Al Meqbali confirmed: "Anyone who insults or contempt the national currency shall be punished by imprisonment for a period not exceeding ten months and not less than a month, and by a fine of not more than OMR 300 and not less than 100 OMR."

“The penalty is likewise for anyone who gives an in-kind gift, such as perfumes, clothes, etc., wrapped or covered with clippings of sums of money, or underestimating cash currencies by any word or deed, which is a crime punishable by the Omani Penal Code,” he added.
