Embassy of India to organise International Day of Non Violence

Muscat: To mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Embassy of India in Muscat will, on October 5, hold celebrations which will be streamed live on its Facebook and YouTube pages, as well as on its official website.

With Gandhi’s birth anniversary – which falls on October 2 – also being marked as the International Day of Non Violence, the event will be held in collaboration with the Raja Yoga Centre for Self Development.

A statement from the embassy said, “Various dignitaries from Oman and overseas will join this year’s virtual celebration on Monday 5th, October.

Munu Mahawar, Ambassador of India will speak about the importance of the event. Sister Jayanti, director, Europe and Middle East, of the Brahma Kumaris, and the NGO representative to the UN, will deliver the keynote address.”

From India, B.K. Asha, director of the Om Shanti Retreat Centre of the Brahma Kumaris, will deliver the felicitation address. Various dignitaries and youth from Oman will be joining in the celebration.

In celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Embassy of India Muscat had organised various competitions amongst the youth.

Gandhi influenced a lot of people with his ideals. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was deeply enlightened by concepts, which included ideals such as the ‘love your enemies philosophy’, which inspired him to fight for African-American rights without the use of weapons and violence.

Nelson Mandela, known as the father of South Africa, was also deeply influenced by Gandhi’s teachings. Mandela had called Gandhi one of the greatest influences in his life.

Former US President Barack Obama said in September 2009 that his biggest inspiration came from Gandhi. In a subsequent address to the Parliament of India in 2010, Obama said, “I am mindful that I might not be standing before you today as President of the United States, had it not been for Gandhi and the message he shared with America and the world.”
