Two people arrested for electronic fraud

Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has arrested two individuals on the charges of committing electronic fraud.

A statement issued online by ROP said, "Al Buraimi Governorate Police Command has arrested two suspects of Arab nationality for electronic fraud against two other persons. The fraudsters would communicate with the victim through a social media website, impersonating a girl from an Arab country."

"During the period of contact, they exchanged personal photos of each other. Then the victim would get a call from a person claiming to be working in a security agency in the same country as the girl. The imposter would then inform the victim that the said girl was being abused by her brother after she was caught communicating with the victim. The victim was threatened to pay a sum of money as settlement, otherwise, the judicial authorities would be taken against the victim."

"The Royal Oman Police has affirmed the need to beware of fraudsters who use their seductive and varied methods of fraud on social media, and the need to pay attention not to dealing with these segments and to preserve values and morals and inform the competent authorities immediately upon exposure to such methods."
