COVID-19 infections down, ICU occupancy rate still high

Muscat: The infections from COVID-19 have been decreasing in the Governorates of the Sultanate but occupancy rate in the intensive care units is high, the Supreme Committee tasked to deal with the COVID-19 said.

A statement by the Government Communication Centre (GC) said, "The committee reviewed the epidemiological situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Sultanate, which indicates a decrease in infection rates in most of the Sultanate's governorates, but the occupancy rate of beds in hospitals, especially the intensive care unit beds, is still high.”

“A number of countries around the world are witnessing a remarkable resurgence of this disease following the opening of activities, and lack of vaccines or treatment for this disease," said the committee. The Supreme Committee stresses that the best way to limit its spread lies in adhering to preventive measures such as wearing masks, physical distancing, maintaining hand hygiene, and other measures of protection for an individual, family members, colleagues at worksites, and the rest of society.

In its meeting, the Supreme Committee also reviewed a number of topics related to the effects of the pandemic in various fields and directed the competent authorities to study them so that appropriate decisions are taken at a later time.

The Supreme Committee confirmed that all its decisions are based on the epidemiological data of the pandemic while minimising its negative effects on various sectors as possible.
