Muharram holiday announced in Oman

Muscat: The Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs has confirmed that Friday, 21st August will be the first day of the Islamic New Year1442.

According to the statement issued by the ministry, the sighting of the moon of Muharram today was not proven, and this Friday will be the first of Muharram, corresponding to August 21 2020.

According to the decision issued by Diwan Royal Court, Sunday will be an official holiday on the occasion of the new Hijri year.

The decision said, "If the 1st of Muharram 1442 AH is on Friday, corresponding to 21 August 2020, the holiday will be on Sunday, 3rd Muharram 1442 AH, corresponding to 23 August 2020. Muharram moon sighting will be declared by the concerned authorities”.
